Green Flowers

We sometimes get the curious question - can you get green flowers?
The answer is, of course. There are many different flowers which are available in green or which have a green tinge.

Flowers which are usually available in green include:
-carnations, roses, anthuriums, Singapore orchids, molucca balm, button chrysanthemums, and more.
Flowers which are sometimes available in green include:
-cymbidium orchids, heleborus, some native flowers including banksias, and more.
There are other specialties too including many kinds of berries and also kale.

Why green? Paired with white it is lush and cool, and with bright colours it can subtly unify and cool them as well. We know green isn't for everyone, but in the right place it can be remarkably lovely.

Bobby-Pins and Brooches

Hiding here and there throughout the studio are some uniquely handcrafted floral bobby-pins and brooches. Yes, made here on the Gold Coast. Most are made from off-cuts of fabric, some vintage, some lace, some sheer.

We like to pin them on our shirts and cardigans and give them to our friends for a fun extra birthday pressie. They are just so cute...

What we love about Singapore orchids

Singapore orchids come in a variety of colours, though most commonly available in shades of white through to pink and dark purple.

They can be a longer-lasting flower, and if wired in a wedding bouquet or corsage tend to keep their look and shape well even when out of water for a time.

Singapore orchids can also be used in arrangements and bouquets in many different ways. If you find they are wilting prematurely the entire stem, flowers and all, can be immersed in water to re-hydrate.

Flower of the week - Protea

We have noticed that about this time of year, as the weather cools down, that there starts to be a greater variety of native flowers available, which is exciting as we love their unique forms and textures. In this week we have had different kinds of Proteas, Banksias, and Luecadandrons.

We just have to tell you quickly the red roses we have today are sublime! They are just about 90cm tall! Wowser! and the kind of red that is not dark or super bright, but full and soft, hard to describe, almost like the red you'd see as a post-production highlight in a vintage photograph.

Hot on the heels of the Vday rush we did this wedding for a truly lovely client. Beautiful white lilies with a hint of green Singapore orchids bordered with lush viburnum foliage.

Weddings are not our specialty, but one of the many things we do here at Adam's. A big thankyou to Linda from Harbour Town Florist too, for her help sourcing these particular white lilies, which came out just beautifully in the end.

How to care for your roses.

Roses can last you longer if you give them a little love. Simply put, flowers are just like us, they will last better if they have clean water, have the nourishment they need, and are comfortable.

When you receive a bouquet of roses follow these steps:

- Cut 2cm off the stem at an angle, this allows the stem to take water up better.

- Put straight into clean cool water, & if you have some, add a little flower food as per the directions.

- Position your flowers in a cool place out of the sun and wind.

- Change the water every couple of days, cleaning the vase.

When you receive an arrangement in floral foam follow these steps:

- Check they have enough water, & top up every couple of days, particularly in hot or dry weather.

Valentine's Day Flowers

We haven't had a chance to photograph all the different beautiful things yet but here's a little price and picture list of a few popular Valentine's products for you.

Classic Red Rose

There's always been something about the classic red rose. I wonder what it is, for surely it's more than just the years of conditioning and marketing we've all been exposed to. There must be a pure and innate symbolism, intrinsic and irremovable from the rose itself, there before anyone ever started buying and selling, something that speaks of life and love with a strong voice, not sweet or insipid.

Simple. Classic. Strong. The red rose has no substitute, no other flower has the same depth of meaning attached to it, the same history, nor world-wide appeal. V-day, dare I mention it, is just two weeks away, no matter how hard we try, no other flower is as sought after as the red rose. But really, what could be more appropriate, as even the name Valentine means strength, and St Valentine was a martyr for his faith, and that is no fickle love.

Bold Blooms

Here's some interesting ones for you...

We love native and tropical flowers, this selection includes Crab Claws, pin-cushion cordifoliums, anthuriums, Vanda, Spider and Singapore orchids, Ginger Beehives, luecadendrons,... and spray roses.

This week we have just got in some natural fibre wrap in many colours which we are excited to experiment with, and new Teddy Bears! How sweet they are. My favorites are a soft latte brown, and hold hearts where you can hide a little note. Also coming are helium balloons.

Our Selection

We always endeavor to have a variety of beautiful blooms for you and love to order in particular things for you if you have a special request. This week we have been advised that some of the growers have been affected by the floods, so certain flowers or colours may be in short supply. We will still be able to provide you with beautiful flowers, and if we don't have what you request we will certainly recommend an appropriate alternative. We know you'll understand, the growers and everyone else affected are in our thoughts.

Sweet Stefanotis

We don't usually have it in store, and it doesn't have the best lastability as a cut flower, but stefanotis will always be special, it has it's very own sweet fragrance and beautiful waxy white flowers. Most often it is used just as a hint through a wedding bouquet. It's flowering in the garden right now and has lots of buds, so it must love this summer's rain!

Almost Christmas

How exciting! Christmas is almost here. We'll try to post some happy things that we're doing with flowers for the occasion this week, but just in case we get busy and forget, here's a tropically-bright getting-Christmassy arrangement we did last week...

This one has in it Birds of Paradise, red Gerberas, Celosia, Anthurium, ginger beehive, oriental lilies, protea, as well as various lush leaves, small native flowers and bark.
